Skills for life in Old Town, Swindon

History

12th Swindon has a rich history, having been in Old Town since 1929.

Early activities included using trek carts and taking part in camping competitions. We don’t do that any more! In 1937, 12th Swindon bought a railway carriage, to act as a meeting place.

More recently, as well as the normal day to day adventures, 12th Swindon has organised trips to Holland and Switzerland for the Scouts and Explorers, with its members having attended world jamborees in Austria, the USA and South Korea.

In 1986 there was an amalgamation with 9th Swindon (Bath Road) Group to become the 12th Swindon (Old Town) Group.

In 2004, the Scout section merged with the 18th Swindon Air Scouts to become 12th Swindon (Old Town) Air Scout Group.

In 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, the popularity of scouting in Old Town increased significantly. 12th Swindon expanded to go some way towards meeting local demand for places by moving to the Moose Hall (larger than previous venues, allowing more children to join), and opening a new Beaver Colony and two new Cub Packs.
