As Scouts, we help young people to develop skills for life, through a range of outdoor, adventurous and team-based activities. Whilst Covid-19 has significantly impacted what we are able to do, we are continuing to run activities for 400 young people in Old Town and Wichelstowe. This includes Beavers (age 6-8), Cubs (age 8-10.5), Scouts (age 10.5-14) and Explorers (age 14-18).
We are meeting in person when government restrictions allow, but of course have additional controls in place to keep us all safe. Some of our groups have done firelighting and archery, examples of activities which are ideal for social distancing.
At other times, our meetings are held over Zoom, allowing the young people to maintain contact with each other in such a challenging time.
We can’t wait to get back to our usual range of activities, and will do so once safe to do so. To give a sense of what a typical year includes, in 2019 the Beavers went camping in Wroughton, Cubs in Bristol and Scouts in Switzerland. All age groups took part in a wide range of other activities which included a real-life Monopoly Run in London, a sleepover under the Concorde, sailing, kayaking, caving and air rifle shooting. We’ll get back to all this and more when we can.
In the meantime, our waiting list remains open for new joining applications (but do bear in mind that we remain oversubscribed, so won’t be able to offer a space immediately) and we are also keen to hear from adults interested in volunteering with us.
We have four Scout Groups in the area, with 12th Swindon based at the Moose Hall in Eastcott Road, 6th Swindon in Ashford Road, 18th Swindon in Charlotte Mews and 3rd Swindon at the Stoweaway Centre in Wichelstowe.
